In September 1984, on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of “For a Fistful of Dollars” (a film that revolutionized the western genre), the monumental “Once upon a time in America”, the final act and the farewell of a great director to the country that has always made him dream, since childhood marked by fascism.
For the Roman filmmaker this project was the most felt, the most suffered, the one pursued for so many years. A dream for a long time unattainable, a run-up to the myths of a lifetime. It was since 1967 that Sergio Leone wanted to make this film, after reading the book “A mano armata” written by a Jewish gangster in 1952. In 1968 after directing “Once upon a time in the west” Leone proposed the idea to Warren Beatty but it did not do anything. Throughout the decade of the ’70s Sergio Leone took care of productions and directed only one film, “Giù la testa”. He always had an obsession with turning his personal way of understanding the United States, through two aspects that he had always loved about that country: literature and jazz. Now that you can watch movies on 123movies, this film is easily available for you.
Sergio Leone was born in Rome on January 3, 1929. He is a son of art; his father had been one of the pioneers of silent cinema while his mother is an actress. From an early age Sergio “breathes” the air of the film sets every day. At 19 he appears briefly in “Bicycle Thieves” by Vittorio De Sica. Then he “makes his bones” working as assistant director and director of the second unit in numerous “b-movies” that in the early fifties were filmed in Cinecittà. In this period he is noted as an excellent assistant in “Quo Vadis” (1951), “Elena di Troia” (1955) and “Ben Hur” (1959).
In 1960 he had the opportunity to make his directorial debut with “The Colossus of Rhodes” which exploited the moment of popularity of the costume films. Against all odds “For a Fistful of Dollars” (1964) was an incredible triumph at the box office, grossing over 3.4 billion lire. An astronomical figure for those times. The critics were very impressed by the style of the young director who had made many aesthetic-visual changes to the western genre.
At the beginning of the 80s the project started to take off. Robert De Niro (the director decided he was the main character) is very interested. The Italian-American actor promises that after the end of Scorsese’s “King for a night” will be available. The cast is slowly completed by James Woods, Elisabeth McGovern, Joe Pesci, Burt Young, Tuesday Weld, Treat Williams, Danny Aiello, James Hayden, William Forsythe and James Russo. For his music his friend Ennio Morricone is always present, for the photo Tonino Delli Colli, for the editing Nino Baragli and for the costumes Gabrielle Pescucci. In 123 Movies now you can simply order and watch it.
